Me on top of a mountain overlooking upper Swat Valley, Pakistan.

The legendary Swat valley bordering Afphanistan was conquered by Pakhtuns (often refered to as Afghans, as they constitute 2/3 of the Afghan population) 300 years ago. Picture taken in upper Swat looking down on Madyan village. The valley has been a laboratory for Fredrik Barth's action-oriented theories in Social Anthropological from the 50'ies.

A tragic family located on top of a hill outside Madyan. The old man is alone with responsibility for 4 of his grand-children after their father died in an accident. The oldest daugther snatched my camera and was very exiting when she found out how to "click" it right - this is her best shot (of four) on top of the roof of their house.

"The McLoad Gang" - starting from left : Aidan (London), Stephen (Texas), me and Rochelle (Melbourne) in Dharamsala, Northern India. May 2000.

Now also including Mitchi and her boyfriend from Frankfurt. The upper picture is taken front of a buddist temple.

One morning in Pristina (Kosovo), some 20 old mothers of sons from Gjakova that serves a collective sentence in prisons in Serbia (Nis), sat down in protest.

....4 hours later they were joined by up to 15.000 people in the biggest demonstration in Kosovo year 2000:

Civil resistance (where demonstrations and collective boycots are the primary used tools) have been part of everyday life for Albanians in Kosovo from 1989, when Serbia removed Kosovo's autonomy and introduced a political regime not much different from that of South Africa at the time. In 1991 90% of Albanians was collectively sacked from their jobs and has ever since been excluded for most resources of the society. The Albanians organised a paralell system headed by LDK and Ibrahim Rugova to cope with urgent needs such as education and health care. But this system was meant to be an emergency response and the massive repression from Yugoslav police forces in 95-96 deprived the Albanians from what was left of their pride, paving way for guerilla warfare and the establishement of KLA in 1998. With support from Brittain and USA, NATO air strikes led to a withdrawal of Yugoslav troops and the UN and KFOR forces had to claim responsibility of the province on an interim basis (protectorate). The international community have not been very successful in its first period, but as municipal elections was completed in October 2000, the step to hand over responsibility to the population have started. Meanwhile Albanians and now also Serbs are eager to push for changes and progress. In this process, identity is in rapid change - and that is what I went to investigate for my thesis in Social Anthropology : Nation-Building in Kosovo.
